Yesterday, the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, former president of the University of Notre Dame, passed away at age 97. President Obama released a statement last night commemorating his life. Many years ago Rev. Hesburgh gave President Obama this signed photo of himself and Martin Luther King, Jr. The photo hangs in the hallway between the Oval Office and the President’s private dining room. Chief of Staff Denis McDonough asked me if I could photograph the picture, so I came in this morning while the West Wing was still quiet to show the placement of the photograph in relation to the Oval Office before any lights had been turned on for tour groups.
